Happy New Year! Here comes the new year, and it is full of geek opportunities.


Program News:

GPS Writing Contest – The 17th Annual GPS Writing Contest begins! There are 2 youth prizes, a poetry prize, a graphic novel prize, the Open Division, and the Scott Imes Award. Submissions will be accepted through 11:59pm May 15, 2015. For all the rules and details go to the website link.

GPS Arts InitiativeCynnthia Anne Michaels: A Garden of Light and Color – Glass. It sits at the crossroads of science and art. In the hands of an artisan, molten sand transforms into a canvas of light and color.

The GPS Arts Initiative is proud to host glass artist Cynnthia Anne Michaels’ very first solo show. Ten of her pop art inspired stained glass windows will share the light with a beautiful garden of whimsical glass flowers. The show will open on Friday, January 30, with an artists reception from 7:00 to 9:00 PM in our Gallery — Room 106 of Event Horizon in the Waterbury Building.

Due to holiday madness, Crafty Geek and Make it Sew will not meet again until January 8th. Starting on the 17th, Crafty Geek will again be hosting Salon Saturdays; 2 weekend hours for you to come get your craft on. Expect these on the 3rd Saturday of the month during winter.

January 25 | 2pm | CONvergence Social Gathering: Hosted by Smokers’ Paradise
We will be having monthly gatherings hosted by different departments to brainstorm/find volunteer opportunities/learn and just have a nice get together. Let’s get together and have some nerd time. These gatherings are 100% optional and no volunteer hours are given, but come if you can anyway. Because FUN!. The gatherings will be held at Grumpys Bar and Grill in Downtown Minneapolis. There is free parking in back and a menu of reasonably priced yummy food and cocktails. Kids are welcome to join during the daytime. We have a semi-private meeting space on the side of the building called the City Club. Just look for the geeky T shirts and the people sucking up all the free Wi-Fi.

We will meet up at the main lodge area of Buck Hill at 11:30. We’ll then get everyone situated and together, and head over to the snow tubing area for the fun, festivities, and snow-melting-in-your-pants excitement!
 
It’s a 2 hour session at a time, $17 per session.You can add another 2 hours if you wish at the same rate, or at $15 after 4pm. Keep in mind, if you would like to go skiing/snowboarding before or after, you’re certainly able to! Feel free to use this page to make plans for that as well if you wish.

Amtgard is a Live Action Roleplaying (LARP) and boffer combat society focused on the Sword & Sorcery, Medieval, and  Ancient genres, and uses safe, foam-padded replicas of medieval weaponry to bring to life the tabletop or video game experience many are familiar with.Bi-weekly participation in games allows you to advance in a class, unlocking levels and new powers. Held in the Main Hall (room 107) at Event Horizon, open to the public.
