February 2015

Note: Unless noted otherwise, most events are held at Event Horizon, our community center in the Waterbury Building (intersection of Central and Broadway) in NE Minneapolis, at 1121 Jackson St NE. We have a Main Hall (room 107) Classroom (room 106A), and Living Room (room 106).
Parking is on the east side of the building, enter door 1121C.

Taking the bus? Got to the Metrotransit website and map to the intersection for Central Avenue NE and Broadway St NE. Routes 10 and 17 are the closest.

Being the shortest month of the year does not diminish the potential geekery you can get into.

GPS Arts InitiativeFigure Drawing Salon – Starting in February the GPS Arts Initiative will be holding a monthly Figure Drawing Salon. The three-hour session would include short, medium and long poses, which allow artists to engage with the subject in varying ways.  We will use a combination of nude and costumed models to support and foster fantasy and science fiction art. Through this Figure Drawing Salon, we hope to cultivate a community of artists to share ideas, support each other, and create.

When: 3rd Monday of every month from 6:30pm to 9:30pm
Where: Event Horizon Classroom (room 106A) 1121 Jackson St NE, Minneapolis

Staff: Arkady Roytman will moderate the figure drawing session. He moderated figure drawing sessions at the Society of Illustrators in New York City for five years. Additionally, he has attended weekly figure drawing sessions over ten years.

There is a nominal fee ($5-$10) to help defray the cost of models and other initial outlays. If we find that there is a need from the community for more frequent sessions, we can look into expanding to twice a month sessions and maybe even weekly sessions.

This month for GPS

February 14 | 6pm – 9pm | GPS Movie Night

Join your tribe for an evening of film and fun in the Main Hall (room 107) at GPS Event Horizon. The movie is FREE! As always, feel free to bring your own snacks (or dinner!) and a comfy chair. We will have some snacks and soda available for sale.

Due to licensing, we can’t publish the title, but we can give you hints.

Sometime in the 23rd century… the survivors of war, overpopulation and pollution are living in a great domed city, sealed away from the forgotten world outside. Here, in an ecologically balanced world, mankind lives only for pleasure, freed by the servo-mechanisms which provide everything.

There’s just one catch: Life must end at thirty unless reborn in the fiery ritual of Carousel.

Still not sure what we’re watching? RSVP for the event at Eventbrite and we will send you the info in your confirmation email.

Optics! Lenses, Focal Length and Aperture. This month we’re going to be talking about optics, or that piece of your camera between the shutter and what you want to take a picture of. We’re also going to be discussing plans for the next couple of months, including future programs, things going on in the community, and things going on that anyone in the club may take an interest in outside of the community. Think of that as conventions, GPS and non-GPS activities that may be of interest for photographers. The weather outside may be frightful, but it’s also possible that it’s some of the most interesting stuff to take pictures of, so get out, have fun, and take some pictures. For further information on future programs, or if you are interested in involving the GPS Photography club in your group’s activities, please contact [email protected], and see the GPS calendar for updates and other events.
