June 13 | 6pm – 11:00pm | GPS Movie Night – the Rise of the Zombie Apocalypse

In 1954, American writer Richard Matheson published a horror novel that was very influential in the development of the zombie genre and in popularizing the concept of a worldwide apocalypse due to disease. His novel has been the basis of the screenplay for four feature films and inspired George Romero’s 1968 classic zombie flick.

For June’s Movie Night event, we invite you to read this ground breaking story and come join us as we screen two of the films based directly on Matheson’s work. We will start the evening with a 1971 adaptation starring Charleton Heston. After a brief intermission, we will return with the 2007 version starring Will Smith.

Location: Event Horizon in the Main Hall (room 107). As always, feel free to bring a comfy chair and snacks/beverages of your own. Limited items will be made available for purchase at the event.

This month for GPS

May 9 | 6pm – 11:30pm | GPS Movie Night – Desert Dystopia Marathon and Cosplay Event

In anticipation of the release of a fourth installment of this Australian masterpiece on May 15th, we present to you a marathon of the Desert Dystopia films from director George Miller and star Mel Gibson.

Just in case you haven’t figured out the series, here are a few more hints:
    • It all starts when a vengeful Australian policeman by the name of Max Rockatansky sets out to avenge his partner, his wife and his son.

  • He Rules the Roads.
    • Then, in a post-apocalyptic Australian wasteland, a cynical drifter agrees to help a small, gasoline rich, community escape a band of bandits.
  • In the Future, Cities Will Become Deserts, Roads Will Become Battelfields and the Hope of Mankind will Appear as a Stranger.
    • And, finally, a former Australian policeman is rescued by a tribe of children when he is banished from a desert town and sent into the desert to die by the desert town’s evil queen.
  • Two Men Enter. One Man Leaves.
Movie Night would like to encourage attendees to show up in costume for this event. Start planning your outfit now and, perhaps, get a jumpstart on your cosplay options for July’s CONvergence gathering. Who will you come dressed as – Max Roskatansky? Aunty Entity? Wez? Lord Humungus? Master and Blaster?

As Always, feel free to bring a comfy chair and snacks/beverages. A limited number of items will be made available for purchase at the event.

Want the title? “Buy” a free ticket and have the info sent to your email.

April 11 | 10am – 10pm | International Tabletop Game Day / GPS Movie Night

The Movie Night is teaming up with United Geeks of Gaming from 10am to 10pm for all day gaming fun!

  • 11am to 4pm We are doing a Iron Designer Challenge from 11am -4pm. What is this you ask… Check the Meetup link for more information:
  • Noon to 8pm We are having crock pot pot luck from noon to 8pm! RSVP to that link to let us know what you are bringing. If you will not be bring something to share but want to eat, we ask you make a suggested donation of $5.

++++++++++++++++++

Movie “Night” Expect a day full of entertaining titles screening in the Classroom (room 106A) intermixed with the live feed of Geek and Sundry’s Tabletop Day festivities. While  one of the movies screened on April 11th will be based upon a tabletop game, we wanted to give some other toys a chance, too. Here are some hints to the titles you can expect to see:

  • A young man finds a back door into a military central computer in which reality is confused with game-playing, possibly starting World War III. To David Lightman, “Global Thermonuclear War” will just be one hell of a game. To everybody else, it will be hell waiting to happen.
  • An ordinary construction worker, thought to be the prophesied ‘Special’, is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil tyrant from gluing the universe into eternal stasis. This film packs in the star power, with appearances from Batman, Han Solo, Gandalf, Green Lantern, Abe Lincoln, and the AWESOME Wyldstyle.
  • Space Marines are sent to investigate strange events at a research facility on Mars but find themselves at the mercy of genetically enhanced killing machines. Hell breaks loose, a Level Five quarantine is raised and only the Rapid Response Tactical Squad, including stars Karl Urban and Rosamund Pike, are allowed in or out.
  • Video game adventuress comes to life in a movie where she races against time and villains to recover powerful ancient artifacts. It’s Angelina Jolie vs the Illuminati in this 2001 Action/Adventure hit filmed on location in the UK and Southeast Asia.

Still not sure you’ve figured out the titles? RSVP through the Eventbrite link and get them emailed to you. As always, feel free to bring along a comfy chair and some friends. There will be snack food and beverages available for sale at this event, but you’re welcome to bring your own…and don’t forget about the Pot Luck!

  • First, watch as Ned solves crimes using his unique ability to turn dead things back to life, including his alive-again highschool sweetheart.
  • Next, swoon over Sam and Dean Winchester as they strike out on a crusade to avenge their mother’s death.
  • Lastly, follow John Nash, as played by Russell Crowe, as he plumets from the verge of mathematical superstardom into schizophrenia and then collects a Nobel Prize later in life.

Along with math and pie related screenings, we will be hosting a “tastiest pie” contest and a round food potluck. Pi-neapple punch will be provided.

As always, feel free to bring your own comfy chair and snacks to the Main Hall (room 107) at Event Horizon – as well as a round food to share. Still not sure what we’re watching? RSVP for the event and we will send you the info in your confirmation email.

March 16 | 6pm – 9pm | GPS Arts Initiative – Figure Drawing Salon

If you sketch, draw, or paint, mark your calendar. Every third Monday of the month, the GPS Arts Initiative hosts a Figure Drawing Salon. From 6:00 until 9:00 PM, artists of all skill levels will have the chance to draw a live model and hone their craft.

The salon meets in the Classroom (106A) at Event Horizon. A small contribution will be requested to help cover the model’s honorarium. So bring your friends — the more artists join us, the smaller everyone’s contribution will need to be.

On March 14th, Anime Twin Cities is holding a Pancake Brunch in the Main Hall (room 107) from 8am to 12pm, to raise money for its Educational Exchange Program fund. The price is $5 per person per trip through the pancake line.

The Educational Exchange Program fund is where we work with the organization Youth for Understanding USA to send students to Japan by providing funds for their scholarship programs.  This aligns with our stated mission, which is the promotion and study of Japanese culture, not only anime and manga, but also the Japanese language. How better could we promote Japanese culture but by sending young Americans over to Japan to experience said culture first hand?

For every dollar we raise through various independent charitable activities throughout the year, the Pancake Brunch being the first of many, the ATC board  has voted to match such donations on a one to one basis from the General Fund.

If you wish to donate or help out, contact Dave Vetrovec at david.vetrovec@animedetour.com. Otherwise bring your stomach and your wallets on the 14th.

GPS Arts InitiativeFigure Drawing Salon – Starting in February the GPS Arts Initiative will be holding a monthly Figure Drawing Salon. The three-hour session would include short, medium and long poses, which allow artists to engage with the subject in varying ways.  We will use a combination of nude and costumed models to support and foster fantasy and science fiction art. Through this Figure Drawing Salon, we hope to cultivate a community of artists to share ideas, support each other, and create.

When: 3rd Monday of every month from 6:30pm to 9:30pm
Where: Event Horizon Classroom (room 106A) 1121 Jackson St NE, Minneapolis

Staff: Arkady Roytman will moderate the figure drawing session. He moderated figure drawing sessions at the Society of Illustrators in New York City for five years. Additionally, he has attended weekly figure drawing sessions over ten years.

There is a nominal fee ($5-$10) to help defray the cost of models and other initial outlays. If we find that there is a need from the community for more frequent sessions, we can look into expanding to twice a month sessions and maybe even weekly sessions.

This month for GPS

February 14 | 6pm – 9pm | GPS Movie Night

Join your tribe for an evening of film and fun in the Main Hall (room 107) at GPS Event Horizon. The movie is FREE! As always, feel free to bring your own snacks (or dinner!) and a comfy chair. We will have some snacks and soda available for sale.

Due to licensing, we can’t publish the title, but we can give you hints.

Sometime in the 23rd century… the survivors of war, overpopulation and pollution are living in a great domed city, sealed away from the forgotten world outside. Here, in an ecologically balanced world, mankind lives only for pleasure, freed by the servo-mechanisms which provide everything.

There’s just one catch: Life must end at thirty unless reborn in the fiery ritual of Carousel.

Still not sure what we’re watching? RSVP for the event at Eventbrite and we will send you the info in your confirmation email.

February 16 | 6:30pm – 9:30pm | Figure Drawing Salon

This is the first salon being put on by GPS Arts Initiative, as described above. They will set up in room 106A.

Think of that as conventions, GPS and non-GPS activities that may be of interest for photographers. The weather outside may be frightful, but it’s also possible that it’s some of the most interesting stuff to take pictures of, so get out, have fun, and take some pictures. They take computer and electronics donations (CRT monitors they ask for $10 donation to help cover the cost of disposal). They refurbish what can be fixed, load up with free open source software, and make available at a low cost. They break down and recycle what cannot be reused. Check the web site for more info.
